He explains that while there may be an end-times Antichrist figure, in this passage, John refers to individuals who had left the early church promoting a false view of Christ. He encourages the congregation to recognize such opposition, but remember their anointing by the Holy Spirit gives them knowledge of the true gospel. Though opposition exists, believers need not fear but can stand firm in their identity in Christ and proactively share the real Savior with others. By abiding in Jesus, the church has confidence, hope, and the true foundation despite any who would try to deceive them.
