In Joshua 7–8, we see how hidden sin can disrupt our relationship with God, how disobedience can lead to unexpected defeat, and how God calls His people to respond with humility, repentance, and renewed obedience. After Israel’s victory at Jericho, an unexpected loss reveals that something is wrong within the camp. But this story reminds us that failure doesn’t have to be the end of the story. God invites His people to confront their sin, trust His direction, and move forward in faith.
What do we do when our failures get in the way of moving forward? Joshua 7–8 reminds us that following God requires more than outward success; it requires hearts fully surrendered to Him. Even when we fall short, God’s grace points us toward restoration and a new beginning. Join us as we discover what it means to trust God’s Word, walk in obedience, and keep moving forward in His purposes.
Reflection Questions:
- What stuck out in today’s message? What did you find challenging and encouraging? Did you learn anything new?
- Read Joshua 7:1-8:35. According to the passage, how does Joshua respond to the defeat at Ai, and how does the Lord respond?
- Why did Achan take the devoted things (7:20–21)? What four verbs does he use to describe his sin, and where else in Scripture do we see this four-verb pattern of sin?
- How does the Israelites’ battle with Ai compare to their battle with Jericho?
- Why did the Israelites take the livestock and plunder of Ai according to chapter 8?
- Why do you think the passage mentions Joshua’s obedience to Moses’ commands in both building the altar and reading the law?
- What do these chapters teach us about the collective nature of sin in a community?
- What insights do these chapters give us about how God views obedience? How does this understanding affect you personally, and what thoughts or emotions does it bring up for you?
- God told Joshua that Israel couldn’t move forward until the hidden things were removed (7:12–13), and only then did the second battle at Ai go differently. When has bringing something into the open, by confessing it, admitting it, or asking for help, become a turning point that God used for good?
- As a community, how can we balance grace and accountability when addressing sin?
- Take time this week to reflect on the hidden sins in your own life (reflection guide on next page), and take the next step of confessing to a trusted individual in your life.
